there are many that believe 2012 is the year the world ends.  According to  
the ancient [Mayan calendar](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesoamerican_Long_Count_calendar), December 21, 2012 potentially marks the end of  
the world.  You decide what you’d like to believe, but just in case, here  
is a list of some of the safest places on Earth.

**1. Istanbul’s Earthquake-Safe Airport**

Rather than sitting directly on the ground, this terminal was constructed  
on more than 300 isolators that allow the entire building to move as a  
single unit in case of an earthquake.  The entire structure can move  
side-to-side preventing damage from uneven forces that may occur during  
catastrophic disasters.

**2. Fort Knox**

Fort Knox is known for the Bullion Depository that stores about $137  
billion of gold.  This gold is housed within concrete-lined granite walls  
and is protected with the utmost security and surveillance.  Not to  
mention the 22-ton vault door with a 10-part combination entered by 10

**3.  The Svalsgaard Doomsday Seed Vault**

This vault is virtually disaster-proof; it lies deep beneath the ice of a
