bought, Built the farm...house

Special. Rustic. Reclaimed.  All of these are appropriate words to describe the house we recently finished in the Pulaski area. As  the pictures show, this home had a truly rustic inspiration built upon a gorgeous parcel of land. The homeowners were able to watch the home being built as they lived nearby, and made the decision to build new as they not only were young and growing family, but a previous dwelling on the property had a few too many remediation issues to conquer.

Their reutilization of reclaimed material and craftiness of what could be used was inspirational.  Each member of the family played their part in the tear down of the old home, one that was formerly owned by their uncle Ben. Uncle Ben taught his nephew, the homeowner, everything he knows about farming, spending 32 years of life together there.  As Uncle Ben aged, walking down to the barn was a chore that became harder through life, though he would come as much as he could to push wheelbarrow and feed the cows twice a day - something that helped to motivate his days. The family named their youngest son after the uncle, as an homage to the man that gave so much of his life to the land.  Today, the first hat on the hook in the corner will be that of Uncle Ben's.

nostalgic build material

Grover Cleveland was president when this flooring was originally installed in the original farmhouse, making it about 135 years old.  Newspapers from the late 19th century that insulated the walls of the old farmhouse were taken out during the demo and will be hung on the walls of the new home to remind them of the rich history the property shares. The beams that are on the ceiling, fireplace mantel and cap, and island legs also came from the old farm house.  That wood had served as the living room walls in the old home, with a local Amish cabinet company helping them achieve the look they sought in their new home.  Though modern building design and concepts have certainly evolved with regard to materials used for sake of cost or practicality, helping homeowners to reutilize as much reclaimed material is something very special to Cypress Homes.

Extreme care and hard work went into cleaning, sanding and finishing the flooring that now is installed in the welcoming foyer and office.  The flooring was  that from Uncle Ben's old home as well, always there as a gentle reminder of all the life that came before.

Barn boards from the shed across the highway, where the heifers reside, were used for not only the posts in the kitchen/great room but also lined the powder room wall along the back wall. The family looks forward to hosting game nights, holiday's, birthday parties, and family dinners in this large open spaces, with constant reminders of the family history their new home holds.

exterior finishing touches

A stunning front entryway with chunky cedar beams and stone piers created for a robust space to sit and enjoy the farm. And though building silos is typically out of the range of our expertise, we think they made for a stunning backdrop for this rustic farmhouse.

This young family look forward to teaching their young kids the farm life, feeding cows, moving machinery and enjoying the serenity they find in life on the farm.  Whether its sitting on the bedroom or porch watching the cows graze, playing with the kids in the yard, or enjoying a sunset after a long hard day on the farm, this family now has a new home to create thousands more memories for years to come.
